WHAT'S BEHIND THE HOMEPAGE?
In this weekly series, you'll get to know the badass female entrepreneurs (and businesses) behind the homepage.
If you haven't yet joined the homepage, we randomly select one lady to feature every week.
Meet Alex Lawless.
Alex Lawless is the lady behind Lady & Company Creative. She spends her days creating websites and brand strategies that put your business on the track to success. She works specifically with female entrepreneurs to help them kill it with their business by designing badass brands that showcase their passion and values.
A few years ago, though, Alex's own online biz dream was failing...
She was running a beauty blog and the track to "success" felt nonexistent. But as soon as she was almost ready to throw in the towel, she had an a-ha moment. And she took it and ran with it.
Now grab your morning cup of get-up and get to know the lady behind lady & company...
BEFORE WE DIVE RIGHT IN, LET'S START OUT WITH A QUICK ROUND OF THE QUESTION GAME…
YOU'RE STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND FOR ONE YEAR. AND YOU CAN REQUEST A BOX OF 5 THINGS TO BE SENT TO YOU. WHAT 5 THINGS DO YOU ASK FOR?
First thing that comes to mind is sunscreen, because this gal burns like a you-know-what. But, I’d also request things like my phone, some earl grey tea, a sketchpad, and a good book.
COFFEE OR TEA?
I love myself a good cup of coffee, but it’s tea for sure.
ALL-TIME FAVORITE MOVIE?
As much as I’d like to say it’s some artsy film, it’s really The Devil Wears Prada. I don’t know what it is, but I could watch that baby on repeat. #NoShame
1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BIZ IN 3 SENTENCES OR LESS.
Lady and Company Creative helps to empower budding female entrepreneurs to start their own businesses by creating badass brands from their passions. In addition to helping them build their business, I also use my blog as a catalyst for business strategy to help their business grow.
2. NOW, LET'S START AT THE BEGINNING. WHAT'S YOUR STORY?
Oh man. It’s not glam, that’s for sure. Honestly, since I graduated high school, I was on this spinning wheel of self discovery. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, what career path excited me, and as an ISFP who has a tendency to never finish the things I start, I just never felt that light-bulb-a-ha-this-is-it moment until about a year ago.
I had a beauty blog that was failing. As much as I thought I wanted it to take off, I just didn’t put in the work and it never got more than 500 readers. But, through the process of building my website and making my logo for that blog, I started to have other people ask if I would help them with their branding. Then, that turned into people asking me for advice on starting their online stores, blogs, websites, etc.
I pretty much took that and ran with it. I started taking classes on design, business, and systems and fell in love.
Around the same time, I also went through a massive period of growth, personally, that changed me for the better. As a woman, equality issues became more apparent to me, and I began to feel intensely compelled to do something to change it. So, I rebranded my business, as well as my life, and decided to start working from those passions rather than “just to work”.
Now, I finally feel like my life and my business have a purpose. And, that’s all I want (and more) for the clients I work with.
3. YOUR LIFE + BIZ JOURNEY IS A BOOK. WHAT'S THE NAME OF THE CHAPTER YOU'RE CURRENTLY IN?
I would call it the “Illumination” chapter. I think I’ve progressed past the dawning period of self and business discovery, and I am now in a season of empowerment. I have finally found my purpose and wish to use that to light up those around me.
4. WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY SO FAR?
Discovering that the elusive “work-life balance” that I hear so many people talk about is a bunch of bull. If you feel like you’re struggling to juggle life and work, you’re doing it wrong. Self care is suuuper important, don’t get me wrong, but if you’re working yourself to the point that you are literally burnt out at the end of each day, you’re just not passionate enough about your business.
I had to learn this the hard way with my first blog. I was irritable, cranky, and tired the entire 2 years I worked on it. But, I work twice as hard on Lady and Company, and I love every minute of it. I wake up each day thrilled to continue doing good for others through my business. I definitely wish I knew 4 years ago that I could be so passionate about what I do that it just doesn’t feel like work in the traditional sense.
5. WE'RE ALL BATTLING DOUBTS EVERY DAY AS ENTREPRENEURS. WHAT'S BEEN ONE OF THE BIGGEST DOUBTS YOU'VE DEALT WITH?
Oh, the imposter syndrome is real, babe. I think the biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome (and will have to continue to overcome) is feeling like: “who am I to be doing this?”.
I tend to ask myself this question each time I get a new client or write an especially strategy-heavy blog post. I go through a period of self-doubt every time. The thing that I have found the most helpful during those moments of uncertainty is meditation. Taking 5-10 minutes to slow my thoughts and get back to a place of clarity makes all the difference.
6. SHARING IS CARING. AND THERE'S SO MANY BADASS RESOURCES FOR FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS. WHAT ARE 3 OF YOUR FAVES?
- The Strategy Hour Podcast: Gather up all the heart eyes and point them at this podcast. It’s no fluff and super informative. Plus Abagail and Emylee are hilarious- cherry meet sundae.
- FB Everything with Courtney Foster Donahue: This course is the best investment I have made for my business, bar none. I have learned everything from how to optimize my Facebook business page to running killer ads that convert.
- Trello for Business: This course literally changed EVERYTHING about how I run my business. It’s an organizational, systems oriented, bundle of kick-ass that I recommend to every biz babe out there. And it’s only $29… I mean, seriously. It’s amazing.
7. IF YOU COULD GIVE YOURSELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE RIGHT NOW, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Slow down, breathe, and enjoy the journey.
8. WHAT'S YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH FOR WHY YOU SHOULD CHASE YOUR DREAMS?
You were given this life for a reason and, likewise, you were given talents and passions to pursue that reason. Live your best life, and dream your best dream. YOU are worth the investment.
